Within the framework of the RE-ACT Schools Project – “Transformation of Schoolyards to Combat Climate Change Effects and Promote Healthy and Active Environments”, Dr. Ioanna Kyprianou opened the thematic workshop on Urban Heat Island Mitigation Strategies with a keynote entitled “Climate Change and Overheating in Cities”.
📅 The presentation took place on Thursday, 20 November 2025, in Mataró, during the 2nd Interregional Thematic Workshop. Ioanna addressed the growing impact of climate change in urban areas, where rising temperatures, air pollution and extreme weather events increasingly affect everyday life and health.
💡 Drawing on her research at The Cyprus Institute, she highlighted the need for cross-sector strategies to reduce carbon footprints while preserving ecosystems, stressing the role of cities — and schools — as key spaces for climate action.
📍 This opening keynote set the conceptual framework for the workshop, inspiring further discussions on how climate-adaptive strategies can be embedded in educational environments across the Euro-MED area. 🌍💚
