Highlights from the 1st Interregional Thematic Workshop in Lucca

27/08/2025

The 1st Interregional Thematic Workshop in Lucca concluded successfully in June 2025, bringing together the RE-ACT Schools consortium, key stakeholders, and members of the public.

The second-day session, open to the public, “Green Infrastructure, Biodiversity, and Health for Schools”, was moderated by Prof. R. Romano (DIDA-UNIFI), coordinator of the RE-ACT Schools project. The event explored forward-thinking strategies for embedding nature, climate resilience, and well-being into school environments.

A diverse group of invited speakers contributed powerful insights and best practices:

– Consortium partners, C. Blanch Sánchez, M. Comas Soler, M. Carrillo Muñoz, and K. Martínez (Ajuntament de Mataró) presented the inspiring ‘RENATURA’ project currently running in Mataro.

– V. Dessì (POLIMI) spoke about the importance of Healthy and Empowering Life in Schoolyards, presenting interesting Italian experiences.

– A. Rizzo (IRIDRA) shared experience from the Inetrreg Euro-MED project ‘URWAN’ and discussed the role of Nature-based Solutions in school settings.

– V. Cottino and I. Cannatà (Architettura Senza Frontiere Piemonte ETS) addressed the many possibilities for schoolyard transformations through structured methodological approaches through the ‘Courtyards in Action’ project.

– K. Perini (UNIGE) proposed a data-driven design recommendation system to assist architects and planners in the design of ECOLOPES, a multi-species living space for four types of inhabitants: humans, plants, animals, and microbiota, through the example of the ECOLOPES project
